What is the inaugural Steve Waugh Foundation India project?
  • The first project of Steve Waugh Foundation India will be an extension of Steve’s existing charity work, Udayan, Home for the Rehabilitation for children whose parents suffer from Leprosy or suffer from Leprosy themselves (Kolkata). The Foundation is currently working with Revd James Stevens and the Home, to prioritise projects and programs for the Home short and long term.

Udayan is a home for the rehabilitation of children of leprosy sufferers in Barrackpore, a lush suburb of Calcutta (Kolkata), India. In Bengali, Udayan means ‘dawn’ or ‘resurrection’ and for the boys and girls there, Udayan does indeed represent the dawn of a new life.

In March 1970 an Englishman, James Stevens, borrowed a truck from Mother Teresa and set out into the Kolkata slums to rescue some of the children of leprosy sufferers. On that first night James Stevens took back to Udayan a mere eleven children. Today Udayan provides for the needs of some 320 boys and girls.

All the children at Udayan have been affected by leprosy in some way. Most were born in leper colonies and have parents who suffer from the disease. About 5% of the children have leprosy themselves. Many of them suffer from worm infestations, tuberculosis, malaria, amoebiasis, rickets and other diseases associated with poverty and malnutrition. With intensive medical treatment and a high-vitamin diet many of these children can be completely cured in just six months.

Udayan supplies this medical care and nutrition. It also provides the children with accommodation in an environment free of the stigma still associated with leprosy in India. They are given an education in both Bengali and Hindi. They have access to a library and to recreational facilities. They have the opportunity to play cricket, learn yoga, dance or play a musical instrument. They are also given vocational training. Mechanical engineering, computer skills, poultry farming, tailoring, batik, and embroidery are just some of their options.

The aim is that when the children leave Udayan they do so with the education, skills and self-confidence necessary to support their own families and become full members of society.

    Customer Attitudes to Community-Business Partnerships
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental, social and community records of companies through the media, campaigns, and advertising paid for by companies proud of their good work.

Research shows not only a growing awareness of corporate responsibility, but also an increasing number of consumers looking to show their support for responsible business practices through their purchases.

    Think Global, Work Local

    Growth

Corporate philanthropy programs attract new customers who choose their services and products based on shared values. Customers who are value-driven contribute to corporate growth in two important ways: they actively seek out products and services from like-minded companies, and they talk about their values with others, creating positive’ vibe’ for those companies who support the community or contribute to a positive social impact.

    Improved Relationships with the Community

When businesses focus on giving back to the community where they are based, where their employees live and work, they not only become part of the social fabric of the community, they create a reservoir of goodwill. As a good corporate neighbour, a company has better access to local opinion leaders and officials; open opportunities to develop advisory boards to counsel the company on potentially contentious issues such as expansion, permitting and regulation; and a positive balance to help offset any negative situations that may arise.

    Best Practices

There are many ways companies can develop philanthropic programs, including direct giving; giving through a consolidated program, choosing a charity or service organization in its own community, creating a foundation, or involving employees directly in providing a service.

There are a variety of ways that corporations can create philanthropy programs that benefit their employees, their brand and business, and make a difference in the community. The most effective programs start from a values base and move out to the community for a positive impact on issues and people that make up the social fabric and the marketplace in which businesses operate.

    Leadership

Giving back to the community, when conceived and executed thoughtfully, creates a win-win scenario for businesses and the public.  From eradicating disease and improving childhood literacy rates to boosting employee job skills, opening new markets, and heightening brand recognition, business and society both stand to benefit greatly if companies can demonstrate programmatic effectiveness, fiscal accountability, and good stewardship in their philanthropic contributions.

According to the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), companies that view business’s contract with society not as an obligation, but as a source for competitive advantage, unlock a powerful opportunity to attract and retain talent and ensure the health of their markets over the long term.

The CECP is an international forum of business CEOs and Chairpersons pursuing a mission focused exclusively on corporate philanthropy.  Its Board of Directors is comprised of 23 international CEOs and Chairpersons.

    Steve Waugh AO Biography
  • Steve Waugh AO
Steve Waugh, AO, former Australian cricket captain is one of cricket’s most legendary players. Today, Steve Waugh remains one of crickets most recognized, revered and respected players.

Steve Waugh is world renowned for his sporting achievements, business acumen and commitment to philanthropy. His achievements have, and continue, to earn him accolades, recognition and awards worldwide. Steve Waugh is not only recognized in the cricket world, but also across sports and athletes throughout the world at the highest levels; he is only one of three Australians to have been invited to join the prestigious Laureus World Sports Academy and only the 4th cricketer to be so honoured.

For the young hopefuls of tomorrow and the veterans of yesterday, Steve Waugh will forever be a sporting legend. But the former Australian Test captain says he stopped being a cricketer the moment he hung up his baggy green.

Speaking about his Foundation, Steve says meeting Mother Teresa was the inspiration he needed to walk away from cricket and devote his life to charity. For years during Australian tours he felt overwhelmed and helpless. The opportunity, however, to meet with noted humanitarian Mother Teresa added a fresh perspective. Here was a tiny, frail lady, bent over with arthritis, slowly shuffling around, oblivious to her own ills and championing the welfare of others. "There was a calming aura about her," Waugh said. "When you were in her presence you definitely felt more serene and peaceful."

Of all the celebrity encounters he had enjoyed, from the Queen to Nelson Mandela and Sir Elton John, this was by far the most important and powerful. Just as thousands of others had gained strength from shaking Mother Teresa’s hand and receiving her saintly blessings, so did Waugh. Now, in places like India where cricketers are feted like movie stars, Waugh has a godlike status and not only for his deeds with cricket’s world champions.

Steve Waugh is not only an extraordinary cricketer, but also a sensitive and warm human being with a hand that reaches out to the needy.
The other side of Steve Waugh is as fascinating as his cricketing achievements. This man is a rarity.
